Domains and publishing

A portal is live once it has been published and can be reached at its address. Those two are not the same thing, and the domain is the part that catches people out.

The words for a domain

Active

The certificate exists and the address works.

Awaiting DNS

The record has not been created at your registrar yet. The portal cannot be reached at the address.

Awaiting certificate

DNS points the right way, the certificate has not been issued yet. The portal cannot be reached at the address.

Your portal always has an address with us, for example onebyg--customers.kilango.com, and it is active from the moment the portal is created. A domain of your own does not become active by itself, and the two look alike on screen without behaving alike.

The readiness check

The status menu shows what is missing before you publish. Blockers mean the portal cannot be used: no pages, a menu pointing at a deleted page, a domain that is not active. Warnings mean it works but is empty: no apps switched on, nobody with access, pages without content.

Publish stays disabled for as long as there are blockers. If the remaining blockers are out of your hands, a certificate still pending for instance, there is an override, and it appears in the activity with a name on it.
